House of New Hope
In the fall of 2006 the House of New Hope opened its doors with the first residents moving in with our staff. By the end of the first week we had 1 pregnant teenager and 2 young mothers with infant children. The home now is at full capacity with 8 young women and 6 babies. Two of the ladies are expecting later this year. We also have 2 live in house managers.
Alongside of the residential program we offer continued education so that they can finish high school or even go on to university if they have the desire and ability to do so. We also offer vocational training and work experience through other local businesses.
In the fall of 2007 we started a sewing and jewellery making business that produces quality products that are exported to Australia, Canada and the United States. It is also part of our vocational training program as they are able to learn to sew and make jewellery.
We are currently looking for property and praying for finances to enable us to purchase and build a permanent facility that will encompass the vision the Lord has given us.
Where we work
Located approximately 700km north-west of Bangkok, and set at an elevation of around 300 metres, Chiang Mai is Thailand's second largest city. Chiang Mai is in relatively close proximity to the infamous Golden Triangle, which includes the borders of Laos and Burma. Due to our location many of the young women we work with are from hill tribe villages with little education or resources.
The old part of the city is a neat square surrounded by a moat. During most of the year, thanks to its altitude, Chiang Mai is less humid and much cooler than other areas of the country.
Hinayana Buddhism is the National Religion of Thailand, but there is total religious freedom and all are protected by the constitution. Buddhism is the faith of 95% of the population while 4% are Muslims and 0.5% Christian. The remaining 0.5% is made up of Hindu, Sikhs and other religions. Despite the fact that Buddhism is the faith of majority, both the King & the Government uphold and support all the religions accepted by the people.
